    Wren's Nest - Feb 2012

Post  macrocephale on Wed Apr 04, 2012 6:34 pm

Some stuff from Dudley, I'll have photos of the rest once I'm back from Easter (I forgot my camera..), I'll have done a lot more prep work by then as well Smile

The big block with the huge Dalmanites cephalon, the largest known are around 7-8cm and this cephalon reachs around 4.5 cm wide, and would possibly rival that! The block also contains many other trilobite cephale, some cross sections of trilobites 'diving down' into the rock, one or possibly two pygidia, as well as many many brachiopods, a small patch of coral, and some wonderfully preserved bryozoans. (I'll do close ups once I have my camera back)

Detail shot of the cephalon, with a relatively large brachiopod to the left of the penny, and the top of a smaller cephalon to the right. Bottom left is a small brachiopod, and just to the left of the large cephalon is a branching bryozoan.

    NEW PICTURES
    Overview of block

Detail of middle, just above the large cephalon

    Detail of cephalon

    As above, showing width

Brachiopods, Bryozoa etc just below the large cephalon

Brachipod & at least 3/4 trilobites (one cephalon, three cross sections 'diving down' into the rock

Larger trilobite cross section 'diving down'

    Possible top of another cephalon

Brachiopod, corals, bryozoa and trilobite pygidium

The individual fossils are generally too small and fragile to remove, but I'm going to clean off the top bits so more of the fossils are visible/clean. That is if the air abrasive at uni has been fixed!
    Thanks geek
