Prepped Aust teeth & more! Pictures now up!

Post  macrocephale on Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:20 pm

Well, it's been a while since anyone posted much here, including myself, so hopefully get around to posting some of the Aust microfossils soon, I've been dissolving loads of it over the last 2 weeks or so, and have around 100 teeth so far (picking them out 1 by 1 from a huge pot of dissolved rubble), a few scales and even a vert, which I found today! I'll try to book the camera-microscope for later this week, and then get the stuff up Asap after that!

There's not too many I haven't I.D.'ed already, I've got the Pallas (Palaeontological association) guide to the Fossils of the Rheatian Penarth Group (my tutor wrote half of the chapters in the book), and a friend did his dissertation on Aust fossils, but I'll label any that I'm not sure on..

Here are three preview shots (taken with a camera through a hand-lens), you can't really see the striations on the last tooth too well, and the textures don't come out too well, but when I get on the microscopes later in the week they'll look amazing!

'Hybodus' minor tooth, with 4 cusps intact (I've seem up to 5/6 on some)

    Lissodus minimus tooth

Severnichthys tooth- Quite a large one compared to most of those that I found, the tip is no longer translucent as with many of the small ones (these look amazing, but are usually under 2mm long so I can't get any pictures without a microscope).

I managed to get a minute on a binocular microscope earlier, here's another quick preview: http://i.imgur.com/z1tzB.jpg
(For reference, the tiny vert in the middle is 1.5mm in diameter!)

The pics are in! Complete album here: http://imgur.com/a/8SFX2

Overviews of some of the teeth that I've dissolved out, and then some detail shots. The scale is 1mm on all pictures.

    'Hybodus' minor shark teeth

    Pseudodalatias barnstonensis shark tooth

    Lissodus minimus shark tooth

    Severnichthys acuminatus fish teeth

    Vertebra from (probably) a fish..

This is a small selection from the first load of rocks I've dissolved, I've got 100+ teeth already, and that's from about a third of the days' finds, so there's more to come!
